Incivility in nursing education is a pressing problem that results in frustration and angst for students, faculty, and administrators. Leadership and resolve are needed to re-create the culture of nursing education. With a focus on the many compelling reasons to embrace civility, as well as the sharing of strategies to bring about meaningful change, the purpose of this program is to empower educators to cultivate civility within their own learning environment.

Susan Luparell, PhD, CNS-BC, CNE, Associate Professor, Montana State University
Susan Luparell is an Associate Professor at Montana State University where she has been involved in both the baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs since 1997. Susan is an expert on the dynamics between teacher and learner in nursing education and their influence on the processes of teaching and learning. She is a nationally recognized speaker and author on the topic of incivility in nursing education and has authored chapters on this topic in several leading nursing education textbooks. Her scholarship focuses on the ethical implications of incivility, including how it affects others and how it can be managed in academic as well as in clinical settings.

Jean Giddens is Dean and Professor at the School of Nursing, Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, and is a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow, 2011 Cohort. Dr. Giddens earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Kansas, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso, and a doctorate in Education and Human Resource Studies from Colorado State University. Dr. Giddens teaching experience includes associate degree, baccalaureate degree, and graduate degree programs in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, and Virginia. She is an expert in concept-based curriculum development and evaluation as well as innovative strategies for teaching and learning. Dr. Giddens is the author of multiple journal articles, nursing textbooks, and electronic media and serves as an education consultant to nursing programs throughout the country.

Julie Shroyer, Senior Policy Advisor, Polsinelli
Julie Shroyer currently serves as Senior Policy Advisor for Polsinelli in Washington, DC. She has over 25 years of government relations experience on health care issues, and works alongside Washington’s leading health care experts on Capitol Hill, in regulatory agencies, national organizations, and advocacy coalitions. Prior to joining Polsinelli, Ms. Shroyer was Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Wheat Government Relations, where she headed up the firm’s health care practice for 12 years. Before this, Ms. Shroyer was a Vice-President of Capitol Associates where her clients included health professional associations, medical research coalitions, and a large research university. Prior to her work in the private sector, she spent six years as Deputy Director of Congressional Affairs at the American Psychiatric Association where she worked on mental health reform. As Deputy Director of Congressional Affairs she advocated for Association priorities in a number of healthcare coalitions, and was instrumental in leading efforts to win the inclusion of mental health benefits in the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Ms. Shroyer got her start on Capitol Hill as a professional staff member for the House Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families. She continues to develop and maintain her extensive bipartisan network of contacts that include members of Congress, committee and personal staff, association leaders, and agency executives.

Kathy Pearson, PhD, Founder and President, Enterprise Learning Solutions
Dr. Pearson is Founder and President of Enterprise Learning Solutions, a firm focused on executive development and learning across industries. She is a Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania and has also served as an adjunct associate professor in the Operations and Information Management Department at The Wharton School. Dr. Pearson have taught operations management courses in the MBA program and Executive Master’s of Technology Management programs as well as Probability and Statistics, Simulation Modeling, and other courses for the department and the University of Pennsylvania. An award-winning educator, Dr. Pearson is heavily involved in Executive Education at The Wharton School, Duke CE, and the Institute for Management Studies, teaching on a variety of topics such as Complex Decision Making, Strategic Agility, The Enterprise Mindset, Stakeholder Management, Operational Excellence, and Strategic Execution. As Academic Director for many programs, she is responsible for the design, curriculum, and overall quality of the program.
